Book a Technical Expert
‘Book a Technical Expert’ is a service provided by the Curtin Institute for Data Science for Curtin staff and students every Tuesday from 3:00 – 4:00 pm. They are held in person and virtually (if requested), and are a great opportunity to network with our friendly team.

The Institute supports a growing network of SMEs, external organisations, government departments, researchers, co-operative research centres, and not-for-profits across various sectors such as, but not limited to, health sciences, manufacturing, transport, art and culture, astronomy, agriculture, and aquaculture.
Our Capabilities
As a university-based research institute, the Curtin Institute for Data Science has extensive experience in supporting researchers with the data science and computational components of their research projects. We have either led or collaborated on more than 50 research projects in the past years, spanning health sciences, humanities, business & law and science & engineering.
Machine Learning & AI
We develop optimal ML and AI models and algorithms to achieve the most accurate predictions and provide the solutions for data driven decision-making. Our expertise span across computer vision, natural language processing, time series forecasting and more.
Big Data Analytics
Our experience in big data analytics for radio astronomy and next-generation radio telescopes such as the MWA and SKA gives us the knowledge and in-house experience to tackle any big data project.
High-Performance Computing
HPC uses supercomputers and clusters to provide solutions to complicated problems. We have a large allocation with the Tier 1 facilities at Pawsey Supercomputing Centre that allows us to commence data projects without delay.
Data Engineering
As an end-to-end solution provider, we routinely offer data engineering and data wrangling expertise to prepare data for advanced analysis and AI initiatives.
Research Software Development
Research software development is an emerging field where software engineers support scientific research through code optimisation and development. Data engineering relates to the building of those automated process.
Training & Education
We upskill researchers and professionals with computational and data science skills by integrating relevant practical units into existing and new courses, workshops and upskilling events.
Visualisation & Simulation
With the aid of a computer, simulation recreates phenomena based on current knowledge. Such simulations and subsequently extracted datasets, help researchers from disparate fields.
Modelling & Optimisation
We develop data and statistical models by using theoretical, semi-empirical, and empirical approaches. We can work with domain experts to develop physics-based models as well as model inversion methods using stochastic or deterministic optimisation.
Project Scoping & Management
Our dedicated Project Management Office support and manage projects end-to-end. We provide early scoping to determine project activities, resourcing requirements and overall scope – including deliverables and costings. Projects are tracked and managed with appropriate processes and by implementing purpose-designed tools.
