Curtin-ChemCentre Alliance
The Curtin-ChemCentre Alliance brings together Curtin University’s excellence in research with ChemCentre’s chemistry expertise and 135-year history of achievements as the state’s premier chemical science facility.
Operating from analytical laboratories housed at the Resources and Chemistry Precinct at Curtin University, ChemCentre is a Western Australian Government entity with a rich history of collaborative research including:
• The Becher Process – the backbone of the world’s mineral sands industry
• Trace element, lupin and broadacre research that has promoted agriculture in our state
• Techniques to determine acid sulfate soils, beneficial uses for mineral by-products, the fate of oil spills and chemical ‘fingerprinting’ environmental contaminants
• Establishment of new or value-added industries in WA including honey, forestry and medicinal cannabis
• Forensic fibre database, synthetic cannabis, novel psychoactive substances and proteomic techniques that have advanced forensic science.
A future focus of the alliance will be on new research, enabling the strengths of our combined capabilities to be put to the task of solving the bigger challenges. This will mean larger projects, with more funding and duration, building on a trend of ChemCentre research and innovation of recent times.
